There are a few ways race affects our relationship. The biggest differences are family culture (American vs. Latin American) and langauge. I have found that the way a family unit operates in latin american culture is much different then in the US. Some of the differences cause conflict and are difficult to understand. Such as the way children care for their parents as they get older, even to the point of moving in with them. I have found that there is a warmth and unity in Maria's family that my family lacks. Knowing Maria and her family has brought my family together.

When Aaron and I are alone, I forget that we even have cultural differences.. we have the same values, similiar ideas, passions, worldview, etc. However, as soon as we have family around, whether it is his family or mine, our cutlural differences all of a sudden are very obvious. Aaron was brought up in a very conservative home, where physical touch between his parents was not expressed too much in front of the children. My parents would kiss, hug and even slap their butts in front of their kids. Despite our cultural backgrounds, our relationship does not or is not defined by them.
